Free, tailored support for new headteachers

The Early Headship Coaching Offer is a free programme that gives new headteachers the tools to become more effective in their role.

To be eligible for this targeted package, you need to be in your first five years of headship at a state funded school and have previously done an NPQ for Headship (NPQH) or be currently on a programme with Teach First or another provider.

How does it work?

Over the course of a year, you’ll get:

  • one-to-one support from an experienced former school leader
  • five coaching calls tailored to you and your needs
  • a confidential, safe space to reflect and discuss personal or school priorities
  • practical guidance focused on your school’s particular circumstances.

There is no pre-work or preparation needed for sessions other than personal reflection time and there is no assessment.

It’s recommended by other new heads

Matt Sadler, headteacher at Hampstead School and current programme member says:

“Starting a new headship in the midst of the pandemic was hugely challenging and made it an even more isolated role. As I started my second year, I was keen to access additional support. My experience of Teach First – in both teacher training and school leadership programmes – is one of high quality.

“The Early Headship Coaching Offer takes what was for me the most powerful part of my NPQH, the one-to-one coaching and mentoring, and makes it the prime focus. It provides a layer of support from an objective voice... It’s manageable time wise and the flexibility around timings of sessions is very helpful.”
